Real-time payment systems in the Middle East region can still be improved
According to the figures cited in this report, in general, the Middle East has seen growth in terms of payment values and volumes through local real-time payment systems in 2020. However, many of their solutions are yet to be found. in near real time, and some, like Israel’s Zahav, are not available 24/7.
Nonetheless, the lockdown in the first half of 2020 brought significant positive changes in the number and value of near real-time transactions for some countries and year-over-year growth rates have increased sharply. This was true, for example, for the UAE’s immediate payment (IP) system, which launched in 2019.
Another example is Egypt, which experienced unusually high numbers at the start of the lockdown, with growth rates falling sharply towards the end of 2020.
During the health crisis, some countries in the Middle East and Africa have seen a rapid increase in real-time payments, however, some are still lagging behind
Outside of South Africa, the clear leader in Africa’s payments industry, other economies in the region have posted positive numbers in transfers through real-time gross settlement systems.
For example, in November 2020, Namibia overtook South Africa in terms of value per transaction made through SADC, the regional cross-border RTGS for countries in southern Africa.
In addition, Ghana’s real-time payment solution, GhIPSS Instant Pay (GIP), saw an almost six-fold increase in year-on-year transaction volume during the first half of 2020. Nigeria was another example of ‘a considerable rate of real-time payments. adoption as a payment volume via RTGS accounted for around half of total electronic payments between January and August 2020.
