The Citi Premier® Card is a great all-purpose travel credit card that has managed to fly off the radar of many credit card connoisseurs. However, it is a low annual fee ($95) card that is well worth adding to your wallet.
At the moment, the card is seducing with its best welcome offer: Win 80,000 bonus Thank you® points after spending $4,000 within the first three months of account opening. Even after winning the introductory offer, the card promises one of the fastest points accumulation rates on the market. You’ll earn three points per dollar spent at restaurants, supermarkets, and gas stations, as well as air travel and hotels. Put into perspective, the Chase Sapphire Preferred (also a $95 annual fee) awards three points per dollar on dining, but only two on travel and one per dollar at gas stations and physical supermarkets. Finally, the card features an industry-leading extended warranty program, providing an additional 24 months of coverage on most electronic devices. Here, more details on why you should consider this lesser-known card now.
A record-breaking welcome bonus and the best ways to spend it
The Citi Premier Card is currently offering an 80,000 point welcome offer, the best ever. This bonus comes in the form of Citi ThankYou points, which can be redeemed in dozens of ways. One of our favorites is towards gift cards at a ratio of 1,000 points to $10 (eg, 80,000 welcome bonuses = $800 in gift cards). There is more of 100 retailers participating in this gift card program, from Apple to CVS Pharmacy to Princess Cruises and Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse.
Our other favorite route to redeeming ThankYou points is transfer to partner airlines. ThankYou Points are transferred to 15 airline partners at a 1:1 ratio, and there are ways to amplify the value of your ThankYou Points with these partnerships. For example, JetBlue TrueBlue is a partner and TrueBlue points are tied to the dollar value of the ticket and are worth about 1.5 cents each. If you do the math, the 80,000 welcome bonus means $1,200 in JetBlue tickets.
Below is the full list of air transfer partners.

- Air France–KLM Flying Blue
- Avianca LifeMiles
- Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

A card that allows you to earn points quickly
The Citi Premier Card allows you to earn points quickly by offering triple points in several spending categories popular among travellers. You’ll earn three points per dollar spent at restaurants, supermarkets, and gas stations, as well as air travel and hotels (plus one point per dollar on everything else). Overall, these are better pay rates than the Chase Sapphire Preferred. Triple points on dining and travel are on par with Chase Sapphire Reserve’s revenue structure and this multiplier remains a key selling point for the Reserve. However, the Reserve’s annual fee is $550 compared to Citi Premier’s $95.
An industry-leading extended warranty program
Of all the extended warranty programs offered by credit cards, the Citi Premier Card offer reigns supreme. First, the card extends the manufacturer’s warranty for another 24 months. That’s double the 12-month extension offered by the likes of the Platinum Card from American Express and the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card. Second, Citi Premier Card warranty coverage extends to a maximum of seven years from the date of purchase and is in addition to customer purchase extended warranties like AppleCare+. Put into perspective, the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Reserve cards allow coverage for up to a maximum of four years from the date of purchase.
All in all, this is the credit card you want to use when buying big-ticket electronics like MacBooks, DSLR cameras, and stylish headphones.
Another highlight of the Citi Premier card is its annual hotel credit. Each calendar year, you’ll earn a $100 credit toward a prepaid, single-stay hotel reservation of $500 or more purchased through Citi ThankYou Travel. Unfortunately, unlike its competitors Chase Sapphire or Amex, the Citi Premier Card does not offer any implicit travel insurance Where credits for TSA PreCheck/Global Entry.
