The retail fuel industry hails E15 sales throughout the year; Urges the administration to remove additional obstacles
ALEXANDRIA, Va., April 12, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — NATSO, representing truck stops, haulage areas and off-road fuel retailers, and SIGMA: Major fuel distributors in the United States have praised the Biden administration for allowing the sale throughout the year of gasoline containing 15% ethanol (E15). The industry has warned, however, that continued infrastructure compatibility hurdles could limit the market penetration of higher ethanol blends sold in United States.
The retail fuel industry has advocated for year-round sales of E15 to help lower fuel prices for consumers while improving industry fuel options and by improving the carbon intensity of these fuels.
“We support the removal of unnecessary regulatory barriers to the sale of higher blends of ethanol. E15 offers retailers the opportunity to diversify fuel options and improve the emissions characteristics of gasoline while reducing costs for consumers and improving America’s energy security,” said David Fialkov, Executive Vice President of Government Affairs for NATSO, speaking on behalf of NATSO and SIGMA. “Fuel retailers will continue to face barriers to investing in E15, primarily in the form of infrastructure compatibility issues and associated liability exposure. While today’s announcement is positive , until these barriers are removed, they will hamper the sale of higher blends of ethanol.”
Specifically, fuel retailers face a state-by-state patchwork of costly infrastructure compatibility requirements. Fuel retailers also face liability issues if consumers misfuel their vehicles, which could void the manufacturer’s vehicle warranty.
The industry looks forward to working with the administration, legislators and all industry stakeholders to address these outstanding concerns.
